Day in Hong Kong

A number of stops today with the majority of them, markets.

First stop The Hau Temple which represents the Tao practice.

On to the wet market that provides the local community with their food.

And then, the jade market. Our guide made sure to caution us about the quality of the merchandise. A sign in the market said it all…jade colored items. I left and walked some of the adjacent streets and founds a pleasant open people’s park.

Lots of green colored items for sale in the Jade Market.
Public park.
I think these gentlemen are playing a game called Othello
This is what the game board looks like.

Back on the bus and on to a flower market.

Thankfully, I couldn’t buy anything or I would be broke.

After we returned to the bus, the guide announced that we were heading to the Chi Lin Buddhist temple. I have been fascinated by all of our visits to shrines and temples but to be honest I didn’t greet this news with a great deal of enthusiasm. The temple is located in the Kowloon area of Hong Kong and was built in 1934 as a retreat for Buddhist nuns. It was absolutely breathtaking. Photos of the interior of the temple were forbidden but take a look at some of the surrounding areas including the Nan Lian Gardens. These gardens were built in 2006 with structures representing the Tang dynasty. Interestingly, all of the buildings were built only with wood. There were no nails used.

Looking up to the temple.
There were about 30 of these rock sculptures around the temple with quotes and sayings. This quote says “A man of faith utters no empty words. He does what he says without conceit and arrogance.”

A couple of fun photos taken as we drove around.

I think Joey has been here.
The use of bamboo for scaffolding is common around the city.

My memories of Hong Kong will be filled with the view of this busy and huge bay, the excitement of late night markets and the beauty and serenity of the Chi Lin temple and the Nan Lian Gardens.

Cheers and good night Joey
