Nha Trang

We stopped at this smaller resort city on our way south to Saigon. The temperature is heightening to the mid to upper 90s as we travel and without much of a break between ports we are getting a little testy. All of that said, it was a wonderful stop.

Much of the city, of about 700,000 people, is new with additional large new construction underway in hopes that it will draw more tourism. This area is referred to as “little Russia” because of the abundance of Russian visitors. That aspect was not noticeable as we toured the city.

Beautiful beaches along the coast.
High rise hotels overlook the coastline.
Small parks decorate the roadway.

Our first stop was to see the biggest Buddha statue in the world known as the Long Son Pagoda.

The temple is in the foreground with the statue behind and up about 120 steps. Correction to Da Nang- that was not the biggest Buddha in Vietnam but the largest Goddess of Mercy.
A couple of more steps and I am there. I did climb them and then forgot to take a picture.
One of several reclining Buddhas in the world.

A short drive later we visited the Po Nagar Cham Tower. This complex is estimated to have been built before the 700s and is dedicated to the goddess of the country, Yan Po Nagar.

Lower level
More steps. These types of areas are seldom at street level.
Temple and tower
Dancers and drummers in celebration.

So, on to another market.

We got as far as a beer. One of the best stops ever.

The Truong Son workshop is a fairly new cultural center that is supporting the continuation of traditional crafts. The gardens are beautiful and the demonstrations interesting.

The visit started with a concert with performers using traditional instruments.
Demonstration of the use of rattan to make furniture.
Weavers
Artificial flower making.

This was a surprisingly fun stop. The beer didn’t hurt.

Cheers and good night Joey.
