Hambantota, Sri Lanka

I seem to have elephants on my mind. So off to a safari.

On the way, we got to see the countryside. Sri Lanka is full of vegetation with 38% of the land forest. Of the 22 million people on the island, 80% are in the farming and fishing industries. Within the crops they produce, there are 33 different bananas and 23 different types of mangos.

This is a lookout tower that farmers use to track elephants that might get into their farms and destroy the crops.
Electric fencing helps keep the elephants away from the freeway.

The Udawalawe National Park hosts safaris. We got to practice before Africa.

Off we go.
There were birds
Monkeys
And elephants
A little one looking for mom.

After lunch, we continued to the Elephant Transit Home where baby elephants receive a milk mixture that helps them survive the dry season. Each day, at three specific times, they have learned to come to the feeding area. They line up and by groups of five the are fed.

Our crowd waiting for the babies.

Here they come
After the have their milk they are fed.
The youngest and smallest elephants group together and get a little confused as to what is expected.
The smallest thought that the feed should be blown onto his back. The older elephant thought that the back made a perfect dish for enjoying a meal

A perfect day.

Cheers and good night Joey.
