Oporto, Portugal

We didn’t stay in the port town of Oporto but traveled north to the Minho Province of Portugal. I thought you might like to see some of the countryside.

Our first stop was the UNESCO World Heritage town of Guimaraes. This is Europe. Just as with other parts of the world, religion and politics played an important role in the history of the people. These tours include many Cathedrals, monasteries, churches and palaces.

The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza which was the birthplace of the first Portuguese King, Alfonso Henriquis
Dating to the 10th century is the Church of N. Sra. Da Oliveira
Flowers were everywhere
A side chapel was decorated with blue and white Portuguese tile.
Looking to the highest ceiling with the pipes of the organ shown.

We strolled the town and Oliveira square.

A celebration of St John the Baptist had just been celebrated
Santos Passos Church.

A short drive later we arrived in Braga with its Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary.

The sanctuary is located at the top of the hill.
First we were treated to lunch.
Of course, wine accompanied the meal that included a cod fish casserole.

Over two hundred steps can be used to get from the town up to the sanctuary or you can take a funicular.

This was just a fun day. A little overcast but we did lots of walking so it was perfect.

Cheers and good night Joey.
