Bilbao, Spain

Once again, it was a trip out of the City. We were going to visit a farmer who hosts a Shepard’s School and produces cheese that is known throughout the region.

Two hour drives offer the opportunity to see the countryside. In this case, the Basque Country of Spain. The minute we left Bilbao the landscape became beautifully mountainous with plenty of trees and pastures. Unfortunately, the sun didn’t appear until after our return to the ship.

Entering the bay
The estates overlooking the harbor were spectacular.
On our way to see the sheep and the sheep dog.
Entering the district of Gomiztegi in the middle of Basque Country which was 60 km from the French border.
The cheese produced by the farm.
Here are our friends, Latxa sheep.
Carlos the Shepard with little Morning, a Basque Sheppard, ready to start working.
Morning was so good about responding to commands. The owner uses a Mastin dog to guard the sheep throughout the day and night to keep them safe from wolves.
Before we left, we were given a lecture on the processing of cheese. The farm is very small and everything is hand processed. Fascinating.
We said goodbye to the sheep who were busy at the feeding trough.

On to the Sanctuary of Arantzazu. It is a Franciscan sanctuary which was first built in the 14th to 15th century. In the 1950s, it was decided that the facility needed renovation. The current interior is surprisingly modern but fits into the mountainous setting.

Front of Basilica.
The altar with a small statue to the Virgin of Arantzazu.
The statue
Stain glass windows
Walkway on the side of the structure.

On our drive back to the ship the fog lifted enough to see the mountains.

More sheep at another farm.
Back to the ship.

This was our last stop for both the mainland of Portugal and Spain. I couldn’t get enough. This is a special place in Europe that could be enjoyed for weeks. Another place to return to in the future.

Cheers and good night Joey.
