Surabaya (Indonesia)

We have arrived at the second of 70,000 islands that make up the country of Indonesia. Surabaya is the second largest city next to Jakarta in population.

We started a heritage tour by visiting the Majapahit Hotel that was constructed 1910 by the Dutch. In 1945, at the end of WWII, the population rose against the Dutch and took over the hotel to gain their independence. The country embraced democracy with a republican government which continues to this day.

After enjoying a late afternoon snack, we were driven to the Kampung Lawas Maspati village. It would be referred to as a neighborhood in the States. We were shown dancing, a small school, children games and a massage demonstration.

We ended the excursion at the Hero’s Monument that celebrates the independence from colonialism.

Hope all is well at home.

Cheers and good night Joey
