Saigon

We wound our way down the Long Tau river following another ship to get to Saigon.

Saigon finally appeared and we found ourselves docked next to a bustling city. Our tour for the afternoon included some of the locations connected to our involvement in the Vietnam War.

Intercontinental Hotel that was used by the news media during the war.
Hotel rooftop that helicopters used to remove the last evacuees.
The Independence Palace which was used by the last South Vietnamese President and by the new Communist Vietnamese Government after the conclusion of the war.
Cabinet Room.
Conference Hall where the surrender took place.
The underground bunker that was used for protection and to strategize the war.

Much like Hanoi, the city includes buildings representing the older French architecture.

The Opera House
The Post Office

Lacquerware is a special craft that was highlighted on our tour.

The many steps needed to produce a plaque.
Artisans at work.

And the Buddha.

I admit to some hesitancy in coming to Vietnam but I was so impressed by the sites and the people. Once again, it is with regret that i leave this wonderful country.

I will be leaving the ship today and traveling to Cambodia to visit Angor Wat. I may not have WiFi and so will catch up after I arrive in Bangkok.

Cheers and good night Joey.
