Lome, Togo

We are continuing to travel north on the coast of Africa. We have several countries to visit in three consecutive days. Our first is Lome (accent over the e). The poverty is evident throughout the area. We had security vans with us as we visited different areas of the city and suburbs.

We had gone through a pirate safety drill. These people, however, were fishermen.
I have not mentioned that unless there is a specific cruise port we generally arrive at the cargo port. It is very interesting to watch the movement of these large containers.
Our security detail.
Our first stop was a meeting with the King of Agbodrafo

He assured us that we were safe as long as we were in his kingdom.

Our next stop was a home where slaves were kept until the trading ships arrived. Dismal conditions.

A wall at the entrance to the house.

Then it was on to a fishing village. The surf was up preventing the boats from going out but we were able to see the netting and get an explanation of their fishing process.

There were about 20 boats with hundreds of people in the village.
The caught fish are smoke as a preservative practice. They appeared to catch smaller fish.

Voodoo is practiced by some of the population. UNESCO has designated this shrine as a heritage site.

A spirit that cleanses the person before they enter the shrine.
The priests that provide congregants with assistance.

We followed this visit with a trip to a nearby village to watch a voodoo dance and ceremony.

The attendants welcomed us and purified the space.
There was never a full explanation of the dance but it included wringing the neck of a chicken; letting it run around headless and then taking a knife and cutting it up (not photographed).
The children were entranced.

As is a tradition in this area, people place goods on their heads as they transport them through the village.

I don’t know how they balance everything for such a long distance.

In spite of the security patrol, we were made to feel welcomed.

Cheers and good night Joey.

  1. Fascinating, Cathy. Glad you had a security van with you. Did they cook the chicken for you after the dance? !! Meeting the King is something special.
