Welcome to Shanghai, China

We began entering the Huangpu River (Yangtze) at 6:30 am and arrived at Shanghai at 9:45 am. It was about a 50 mile distance from the ocean to the port. Everything along the river looked very similar to traveling past industrial port areas in the U.S.

First stop on today’s excursion was to Shanghai Museum. We had been told that the Terracotta Warriors were on exhibit. Unfortunately, we were a week late. The museum was still worth the stop.

They had a special exhibit of Minq era furniture which was interesting because of its simplicity.

The different ethnic clothing from various areas of the country was displayed on a separate floor.

There were masks on display that were used for the Nuo opera.

I got caught up in the paintings from the various dynasties that showed a progression of technique.

Calligraphy was developed in different regions of the country using different characters but seems to have started in 700s BC and used on vessels or stone.

This is for Steve- the Utopia produced car was a big hit in the museum.

From the museum, we walked through the people’s park which is considered the center of Shanghai to the Yu Yuan Gardens. These gardens were owned by a local powerful and rich family. Today they are appreciated for the beautiful scenery and the artistic style of the architecture.

The tour ended at the market that is adjacent to the garden. It was indescribably fun experience.

Thankfully, we had a guide to help us find our way out.
